Not quite a Joan Harris, as she is not overtly sexy in that way nor does she often depart from smooth solids.  I can see it on Bobbie Barrett if she was perhaps 5 years younger or so. Perhaps, back when she worked as a show girl.

Or, there’s the cute nurse Phoebe,who is neighbor to Don Draper’s bachelor pad. With her pixie cut and humor, she could really own this one~

My very favorite gothic dolly dress. Sold to Australia, but the photos remain!

If you are familiar with my Etsy store, you know that one of the things that excites me is reinventing the way something is worn. I get a creative kick of repurposing something that was written off.  One of the easiest way to do this is to hike up elastic waist skirts and make them into strapless dresses. However, I also take doughty tunics from two piece sets (think 80s mother-of-the-bride), and style them as sexy party dresses! I hate waste and thank Basya Berkman for this inheritance. She was my great-grandmother, the family matriarch and namesake of this blog (and my store).

I love how this outfit turned out on my model.  The label is actually the respected designer house of Judith Ann and commanded a significant amount of money in its day in the formal wear market. Yesterday’s frump is today’s Gothic Lolita!

One of the most striking skirts I’ve ever had in my store. This is a vintage Lanvin from the 1980s, is pleated throughout, and buttons down the front, leaving a large, sexy slit halfway down, Waist is 31”.

As a follow up to my long, gushing post on the fashions of the movie Shampoo, this one is dedicated to one single outfit: the smashing sequined gown worn by Julie Christie’s character “Jackie”. Black, extremely form fitting, with a high neckline at front and a crazy gorgeous open back plunging unbelievably low, Jackie was completely over dressed and over the top in this scene - just as we would expect from a femme fatale/rich man’s mistress. She managed to steal the show, of course, but only as a desperate plea for recognition as something more than a…mistress. See the movie.

There are no good online pics giving you a full-length view of the majesty of this gown, but there are pics of both Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman who were inspired by it and had it custom made for them. Not the same, but better than nothing. Where is that actual gown today?! Ms. Christie’s closet?

More French opulence. Sick.
